NDIS Funding and How It Works

Understanding NDIS plan management types

How your NDIS plan is managed determines which providers you can access. There are three management types:

Self-managed

You manage your own funds and pay providers directly. You can generally choose registered or unregistered providers, including Flourish Health.

Plan-managed

A plan manager handles invoicing and claims on your behalf. You can generally choose registered or unregistered providers, including Flourish Health.

NDIA-managed

The NDIA manages your funds directly and pays registered providers only. Flourish Health works exclusively with plan-managed and self-managed participants.

Not sure how your plan is managed? Check your NDIS plan document or ask your support coordinator. If your funding is currently NDIA-managed and you want to access Flourish Health, you can ask the NDIA to change how your plan is managed. The NDIA will update your plan only if it agrees.

What the NDIS funds for therapy

Occupational therapy is typically funded under Capacity Building supports in your NDIS plan. The specific budget lines include:

  • Improved Daily Living (CB Daily Activity) - the most common funding line for occupational therapy, covering assessments, therapy sessions, report writing, and equipment recommendations
  • Improved Relationships - for therapy focused on social participation, routines, and relationship-building goals
  • Improved Health and Wellbeing - for therapy related to physical health, mental health, and exercise
  • Core - Assistance with Daily Life - in some cases, core funding can be used for therapy that supports daily living tasks

Your support coordinator or plan manager can confirm which budget line applies to your goals. If you are unsure, contact us and we can help you identify the right funding category.

What our unregistered status means

Flourish Health is NDIS-aligned and unregistered. Provider registration is separate from an individual occupational therapist’s AHPRA registration. For a participant, the practical boundaries are:

  • Flourish works with plan-managed and self-managed participants, not NDIA-managed participants
  • Some supports must use a registered provider regardless of how a plan is managed, so the requested service must be checked
  • Every Flourish occupational therapist holds AHPRA registration; provider registration and practitioner registration are different things
  • Clear agreements - we confirm the services, responsibilities, and cancellation terms before therapy begins
  • Funding and clinical suitability are confirmed before work starts rather than assumed from the plan management type alone

Service agreements

Before therapy begins, we confirm the services to be provided, funding pathway, scheduling arrangements, cancellation terms, and responsibilities of each party.

If you have questions about how your NDIS funding works, we can help you understand which budget category may apply and what information your plan manager or support coordinator may need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Flourish Health's NDIS registration status?

Flourish Health is an NDIS-aligned provider (unregistered). This means we work with plan-managed and self-managed NDIS participants. Those management types generally allow registered or unregistered providers, although some supports must use registered providers. We work exclusively with plan-managed and self-managed funding.

What is the difference between plan-managed, self-managed, and NDIA-managed?

Self-managed: You manage your own NDIS funds and pay providers directly. You can generally choose registered or unregistered providers.
Plan-managed: A plan manager handles your invoices and claims. You can generally choose registered or unregistered providers, including Flourish Health.
NDIA-managed: The NDIA manages your funding and pays providers directly. NDIA-managed participants can only use registered providers. Some supports must use registered providers under every management type. Flourish Health works exclusively with plan-managed and self-managed participants.

How does NDIS funding work for occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy is typically funded under Capacity Building supports in your NDIS plan. We work with plan-managed and self-managed participants, and your support coordinator or plan manager can confirm which budget line applies.

What NDIS budget categories cover occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy is typically funded under Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living (also known as CB Daily Activity). Some goals may also fall under Improved Health and Wellbeing or Core - Assistance with Daily Life, depending on the support being delivered. Your support coordinator or plan manager can confirm which budget line applies.

Do I need a referral to access NDIS occupational therapy?

No GP referral is needed. You, a family member, support coordinator, or plan manager can contact us directly. If you have a support coordinator, they can make the referral on your behalf.

Can I switch to Flourish Health from another provider?

You can contact us to discuss changing occupational therapy providers. Before accepting the referral, we confirm service and funding arrangements, current clinician capacity, and any existing agreement or notice period you may need to address with the previous provider. Relevant reports can be requested with your consent.

What areas do you cover?
