Our Therapeutic Orientation
Emphasis
is placed on HOW to get you moving in the desired direction rather
than analysing why something is not going well.
We subscribe to the ethical imperative of increasing options. We work with a model of self-responsibility, treating clients as able to determine their needs, and expand their repertoire of choices and behaviours in order to feel better, achieve goals, grow, improve relationships and life in general.
Flourish Psychologists practice the following therapies:-
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Brief Solution Focussed Therapy
- Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
- Hakomi Mindfulness Psychotherapy
- Hypnotherapy
- Interpersonal Therapy
- Couples Therapy
CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy targets behaviour change and thinking (cognitive) change. The repetition of patterns of thinking and behaviour, whether helpful or unhelpful, become automatic and unconscious. The process of therapy brings these patterns to conscious awareness and then changing them, or increasing the options you have, is possible.
Behavioural Therapy involves changing what you DO or how you act to improve your outcomes. For example, a small change such as looking at people when listening to them can make a large impact on social interactions.
Cognitive Therapy targets how you THINK. Thinking styles influence how you are, what you do and how you feel. For example when we think of bad things occurring in the future we can become very anxious or fearful.
Sharon and Carl say:-
We wish we had done this years ago
Brief Solution Focussed Therapy is future oriented. It is often easy to focus on current barriers, problems and bad times. Solution focussed therapy orients you to what you do want, rather than what you don’t want. You are facilitated to fully explore, invest in and create your desired outcome and to notice what you already have and when the outcome is actually occurring and how this can be enhanced. A good outcome can be achieved even if the cause of the problem is not known.
NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming is a synthesis of and a way of understanding all methods of therapy and change. It was developed by modelling excellent therapists. It involves the use of language and non verbal communication by the therapist in very specific ways to effect change in a particular individual. It is a dynamic approach emphasising development of rapport between the conscious and unconscious realms. NLP practitioners presuppose people’s ability to grow, learn, develop and achieve their goals.
Hakomi Mindfulness Psychotherapy uses a state of consciousness called mindfulness. This is the practise of turning awareness inward to one’s own present felt experience. Exploring one’s internal landscape in detail (i.e. thoughts, body sensations, emotions, impulses, images, etc.) in the present moment brings core unconscious material to awareness which can then be examined, understood and changed. It is a gently experiential therapy oriented to connecting with your present here- and - now experience with interest and receptiveness.
Hypnotherapy is a state of deep relaxation or trance which is natural and safe. The hypnotherapist uses trance induction, specialised language patterns and hypnotic suggestions to target and access the resources of the unconscious mind. The main factor in its success is the person’s motivation to work with this approach and reach the goal they desire. For the client this is a relatively passive form of therapy.
Interpersonal
Therapy focuses on the relational dynamic between you and
others. How we think, feel and behave is affected by how we relate
to each other and our relationships affect our quality of life.
Couples Therapy is based on the idea that the behaviour of individuals in relationships is influenced and maintained by the way individuals and systems interact with each other. The unit of treatment isn't just one person - even if only a single person is present - it is the set of relationships in which the person is imbedded. This way of working involves engaging with the relationship system as a functioning unit. Marriage counselling is generally brief, solution-focused, and specific, with attainable therapeutic goals.
