International Day of Families - Monday 15th May 2006
The Power of Families
Families - we all have them in one form or another. Despite the changing nature of families in our society, one thing remains constant.
That is the importance of our families to our health and wellbeing.
In working with young people and their families as a psychologist I have discovered how vital those close to us are in influencing who we are and how we choose to shape our lives.
When things become difficult for one member of a family, the entire family is affected.
However when outside help is needed, family members may be reluctant to participate in counselling for fear of being blamed for problems.
Regardless of who or what is the cause of a problem, problems are always overcome more easily and effectively when everyone participates in creating a solution.
In turn wellbeing will improve for all involved.
We should never underestimate the power of a family, working together.
